Wood Species Choices

The best wood countertop choices.
Wood countertops can be fabricated from just about any species. Typically, harder and denser woods provide a more durable surface but many softer woods may be used as well. Any choice made is dependent on the look, feel, and use of the wood type. As with any wood type, the durability can be improved with modern wood finishes. Oils, varnishes, polyurethanes and catalyzed finishes are all choices which can provide the specific look, feel and use of the clients counters.

FABRICATION
Seacoast Soapstone can provide plank style counters as well as the traditional butcher block edge grain style. Our countertops are constructed with the finest waterproof wood glues and epoxies. Most counters are made at 1 ½” thick. Other custom thickness are available. Typically, PLANK style counters are built with 6-8” wide planks to provide the most stable tops. BUTCHER BLOCK style counters are made from 1 ½” thick stock and turned on edge prior to gluing. This produces the narrower strips which provide the traditional look of cutting boards and prep tops.

FINISHES
A specific finish can produce a look and feel which only wood can provide. Whether the tops are used in food prep or just as decorative tops, we can provide advice on which type of finish to choose. As with any wood product, the finish choice may need periodic maintenance. We can provide assistance and advice on all finishes.
